Greetings of peace.
"The raid on the immigrants working in Postville, Iowa, this spring was
cause for alarm, not only for the immigrants themselves, but for all Iowans
who believe in just treatment for all human beings. "
Hilary Mullany OSF

their founding, are sponsoring a Forum to look at the past, present and

Rights.

"We recognize the challenges that resulted from the raid at Postville in
May, in addition to the many subsequent raids across the country, are
directly related to the issue of human rights, an issue that transcends
national boundaries. The UDHR is recognized as the foundation of
international human rights law, the first universal statement on the basic
principles of inalienable human rights, and a common standard of achievemen=
t
for all peoples and all
nations." Jan

*HUMAN RIGHTS =96 CELEBRATING 60 YEARS
OF COMMITMENT AND STRUGGLE
WITH A FORUM ON IMMIGRATION IN AMERICA*
On Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2008, the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton=
,
Iowa, will host a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) that will focus on immigration as a huma=
n
rights issue.
The free, public event will be at the Vista Grande Banquet and Conference
Center, 2141-16th Street NW, Clinton, from 1:00 through 5:00 P.M.
The serious nature of failed immigration policy in the U.S. was never so
clearly demonstrated than in the raid on the meat packing plant in
Postville, Iowa, on May 12, 2008.
The October 5th event will feature Amy Weisman, deputy director of the
University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, who will review the history of
the UDHR, its global and national implications, and how it relates to the
crisis in Postville and throughout the U.S.
Iowa City immigration attorney, Dan Vondra will explain the legalities of
U.S. immigrations policy and Sandra Sanchez, immigration counselor with the
American Friends Service Committee, Des Moines, will review the status of
current immigration law and the possibilities for meaningful reform.
Clinton Franciscan Sister Jane McCarthy, who ministers with Spanish speakin=
g
parishioners in Clinton and who recently spent three weeks assisting the
victims of the Postville raid, will facilitate a discussion about Iowans wh=
o
have negotiated the immigration process.
The afternoon will conclude with a perspective on what
comprehensive immigration reform could look like. Sandra Sanchez, the
director of the Immigrants' Voice Program for the American Friends Service
Committee, Des Moines, has worked for over 10 years with immigrants in Iowa=
.
A native of Mexico, she is accredited by the Board of Immigration Appeals t=
o
give legal advice on immigration law. She was one of the two leaders behin=
d
the grassroots organization: United for the Dignity and Safety of Immigrant=
s
(UDSI), which in April 2006, turned out the historic civic mobilization of
almost 6,000 immigrants in Iowa advocating for comprehensive immigration
reform.
There will be time for questions, discussion, "hands-on" activities designe=
d
to bring home the reality of immigration as a human rights crisis, and a ne=
w
video, "Dying to Live: A Migrant's Story."
