 Hi,
**
*Scott County NAMI Walks* is an event for celebration of well wishes for
those with mental illness; to fight stigma and raise money for local
programs. Join us *May 3 at Credit Island Park (check-in begins at 8:30,
the walk at 10 am),* either in person or in spirit with a donation to NAMI
Scott County. You can join my walk team at
www.nami.org/namiwalks08/SCI/eccentrics, or donate to NAMI Scott County
through my personal walk page at www.nami.org/namiwalks08/SCI/mthomas

All illnesses have a continuum from perfect health to severe disease, and I
think most of us are somewhere in the middle. Especially as we age, we
could have slight heart vulnerability, tendency to diabetes, lung issues,
etc. So it's always a good idea to practice prevention/good health care,
like not eating too much sugar, getting exercise, and practicing good
sanitation to avoid infection.
Mental health is the same - all of us are more or less vulnerable to mental
illness issues, even if we don't have an acute or severe mental illness.
Sometimes we might be walking on the ledge, so to speak, needing to be
careful we don't slip or stumble and fall.

Knowing this is an opportunity to be understanding and compassionate toward
people who are genetically or biologically more fragile in the neurological
area. It's not so hard to imagine yourself in someone else's shoes.
Imagine/remember how a kind word from someone has made all the difference in
your day. Imagine/remember how being affirmed can feel when you're doubting
your usefulness to this world.
Get the idea?
It's about public health, which has wiped out many diseases by providing
clean municipal water, among other things. Public health in the mental
health area is about kindness and empathy. It's not so hard to imagine what
it's like to be in pain, and what you might need from other people when the
pain is there.
People with mental illness experience stigma, judgments from others that
they are too out of the ordinary and can't be tolerated. It's painful to be
insulted like that.
Stigma is one of the reasons NAMI Scott County has joined with the national
NAMI Walks, to stand up against stigma and for compassion. You may or may
not have a diagnosis from a psychiatrist, but you can surely understand a
fellow human being facing a condition he or she hasn't chosen, and wish that
person well.

*Please join us for NAMI Walks on May 3rd to show your support.
*
Thank you,

Margaret Thomas
