*Braley Statement on SCHIP Veto Override Vote*

*Republicans Block Health Insurance for *

*26,000 More Iowa Kids*

* *

*Washington**, DC ** – *Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) released the following
statement today after Republicans standing with President Bush successfully
blocked an override of his veto of the Children's Health Insurance Program
Reauthorization Act, a bill that would provide $35 billion of additional
funding for SCHIP programs like HAWK-I:

"I am extremely disappointed that Republicans in Congress have blocked
healthcare for millions of American children. This bill would've had a huge
impact on our state, giving health insurance coverage to 26,000 more Iowa
children—and 3.8 million more American kids—for the first time.

"Children's health care is a moral issue. The kids who benefit from this
program are those whose parents work hard but can't afford the high cost of
health insurance. These are middle class families, but they've been left
behind by our broken healthcare system. Their children don't deserve to be
left behind too.

"It's frustrating that the Republicans blocking this bill are willing to
stand with the President over the health of America's kids. I'll be working
to ensure that no child currently covered by Iowa's HAWK-I program has their
insurance endangered by the President's veto. I also expect the issue of
kids' healthcare to be considered by Congress again soon."

*Hare Statement on Republican Rejection of Bipartisan Measure to Expand
Children's Healthcare*

* *

*WASHINGTON**, DC-** Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) * today released the
following statement *after House Republicans successfully sustained
President Bush's veto of bipartisan legislation to provide health care for
10 million low-income children through the State Children's Health Insurance
Program (SCHIP), including over 470,000 in Illinois.*

*"Today's vote to override the President's veto of SCHIP was one of the
easiest I've made as a Member of Congress.*

*"No child should go without health care simply because their family cannot
afford it. *

*"Unfortunately, too many House Republicans decided to stand with President
Bush instead of the 10 million low-income children—including over 470,000 in
Illinois—who would have received health care from this legislation.*

*"These Republicans—who have no problem spending over half a trillion
dollars on the war in Iraq but object to insuring low-income kids—will be
held accountable for their votes.*

*"Until then, this Congress will continue to work to ensure SCHIP is
reauthorized in a timely fashion."*
