RECLAIMING MORAL VALUES RETREAT
Saturday - January 20, 2007 (9 AM - 2PM)
St. Mary's Monastery
2200 88th Ave. West
Rock Island, Il 61201
THEME: Moral Values and the Progressive Identity:
"How your values determine your identity & affect your political actions"
WHO WE ARE: THE RECLAIMING MORAL VALUES FORUM
As members of the Reclaiming Moral Values Forum, we are connecting with an
emerging movement of progressives who are learning how to express our
progressive values and the progressive worldview in a more powerful and
persuasive way. Our goal is to change the cultural, political and social
conversation in our nation to reflect progressive values & principals in all
aspects of our private and public lives. Our goal in 2007 is to expand our
conversation on progressive moral values throughout the Quad City area.
WHAT WE HAVE PLANNED – RETREAT HIGHLIGHTS
Workshop I. LOOKING INWARD: The Moral Values Inventory
This workshop will focus on getting in touch with your most deeply held and
cherished values. We will explore what these values indicate about your
personality as well as the type of issues that attract your attention, and
motivate your efforts to change the world.
* What values do you strongly believe in?
* What values do you actually practice? Are they the same?
* Does faith play a major role in your value system / worldview?
* What is your vocation as a progressive advocate?
Workshop II. WHAT DO PROGRESSIVES BELIEVE? Our Common Values
Phillip Cryan of Iowa Citizen's Action Network (ICAN) is conducting this
special workshop. ICAN is launching a statewide initiative to bring together
progressives in order to create a list of core progressive values that all
progressives can use to create a central message regardless of what specific
issue or issues we focus on in our public advocacy work. Phil will explore
how the right wing conservative movement has successfully created a
politically dominant "conservative echo chamber", and what progressives can
do to create a "progressive echo chamber" that captures the moral values
debate that is taking place throughout our nation.
Special Planning Session: QUAD CITIES SPIRITUAL PROGRESSIVE CONFERENCE 2007
We have begun the planning for a "Spiritual Progressives" conference to be
held in the Quad Cities in November '07. This conference will bring together
a diverse group of religious and spiritual progressives to focus on creating
an agenda for spiritual activism in our region. We would like your input
and participation.
