Please join us for our next PACG Health Care Reform Forum meeting on
Tuesday, August 7th, 6pm at the Davenport Unitarian Church, 3707 Eastern
Ave.

These days, especially since the release of "Sicko," the topic of health
care reform is gaining more and more traction in discussions of public
affairs and, in fact, actions, not just words, are starting to emerge. Just
yesterday the Senate passed legislation to reauthorize the State Children's
Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) with a veto-proof majority, and one day
earlier the House also voted to reauthorize the program; both versions would
expand health care coverage for millions of children in this country. This
program isn't out of the woods yet, but the strong bipartisan support for
the Senate bill, with the Republicans led by Iowa Senator Grassley, is a
sign of hope for even bigger and better change down the road.

BUT, quality health care reform will only happen with strong grassroots
support from people willing to learn about the issue and then, in their own
ways, work for change. Our current health care system is unstable (or, as
is often stated, "in crisis")--the times, they really are a-changing. Be
part of channeling that change in the right direction by coming to our
next PACG
Health Care Reform Forum meeting on Tuesday, August 7, 6 PM, at the
Unitarian Church in Davenport.

We'll be hearing about the action plan on health care from Joe Bolkcom of
Working Families Win and what we can do to help that organization advance
the cause of health care reform. We'll also be talking about how we can
have input into the Health Care Commission created by the Iowa legislature,
due to finish their report in December. At this point, the health care
reform situation in Illinois is, unfortunately, pretty unclear--all tied to
the impasse over the budget--but we'll be talking about what actions, if
any, we might want to take in that state as well.

Everywhere you turn, momentum is building for a better, more humane health
care system. With your help, we can add to that momentum right here in the
Quad Cities.

Hope to see you on Tuesday!

Karen Metcalf
