There will be a press conference at the proposed site of the proposed gun
factory next to the Welcome Center in Le Claire on Monday Apr 30th at 10:00
am, called by the folks who want to purchase the land and preserve it. We
ask that anyone who is in opposition attend. We need a lot of bodies.
Elmer Brunk who has proposed to purchase the lot sent me the following
points on their position:
*1. In 1994 Congress banned assault weapons, including copies and
duplicates*
* *
*2. There was in essence a freeze put on assault weapons, and this was
accomplished at the urging of law enforcement officer. *
* *
*3. Les Baer found way to get around this ban. He manufactures guns
functionally identical to the banned weapons. Baer in essence undermined the
Congress of the **United States** and the law enforcement community *
* *
*4. Les Baer is not a good neighbor. *
* *
*5. Elmer Brunk and Cynthia Vaughan made an offer to purchase the property
the City of **Le Claire** wants to sell to Les Baer. We are not trying to
solve the gun debate. There are experts on that matter who know a lot more
than we do. We are trying to stop the location of a gun manufacturer in a
quiet, residential area. *
* *
*6. We need a lot of help and support. Not just for us, but to influence
the City of **Le Claire City Council**. If they indeed want to continue to
sell to Les Baer, then at least provide space for him in the industrial
park.*
* *
*7. We need as many residents and business people as possible to attend
next Monday night City Council meeting. You don't have to write letters
or statements (though that would be helpful), you don't have to speak before
the City Council ( though that too would be helpful), but we do need you to
come to the meeting and be willing to be acknowledged as against a gun
manufacturer coming to LeClaire. *
* *
*8.We know that this is an area that values guns. But it is also an area
that is now becoming a prime residential area in and around the **Visitor**
**Center**. Guns are a divisive issue, and a very explosive issue. Why
put that type of business in a very successful residential area. *
* *
*9. The jobs he will create will not come from our community. The 16
employees he now has will continue to commute from the Hillsdale area! These
employees typically would not be shopping and doing business with other
LeClaire businesses. *
