Tuesday, Tax Day, Iowans will wake up, head down to their main post office,
and do what all honest Americans do - pay their taxes.
Sadly, many Iowans may not know this, but they will also be paying another
tax - the Wal-Mart Tax.
What's the Wal-Mart tax?
Everyday, because Wal-Mart fails to provide affordable health care, Wal-Mart
workers and their families are forced onto taxpayer-funded public health
care assistance. Nationally, Wal-Mart's health care crisis and
irresponsibility costs taxpayers over $2.5 billion a year.
In Iowa, the Wal-Mart health care crisis costs Iowa's taxpayers an estimated
$10 million each year.
This is the Wal-Mart tax, it hurts Iowans, it's wrong, and it must stop.
In addition, Wal-Mart owns its stores, but the pretend they don't. They have
been found to set up fake out-of-state "shell" companies and then they pay
rent on their own store to their own fake company. They then deduct the cost
of rent so they don't have to pay corporate income taxes on it. This scam
has helped Wal-Mart avoid $3.39 billion in state taxes between 1999 - 2005.
So next week, on Tax Day, join WakeUpWalMart.com supporters who will be
speaking out all across America against the Wal-Mart Tax.
In Iowa, WakeUpWalMart.com supporters will be holding five tax day actions
(or tax day protests, if you will) on Tuesday, April 17 with one goal - Stop
the Wal-Mart Tax!
The truth is if we are going to "Stop the Wal-Mart Tax" we need you to join
with WakeUpWalMart.com supporters who will be speaking out all across Iowa.

In Des Moines, we will hold a press conference with Senator Hatch, a leader
in the fight to provide health care to Iowa's children, to emphasize how
Wal-Mart's health care crisis is contributing to the $13 million dollar
budget shortfall the hawk-i health insurance program is currently facing.
This shortfall could cause 15,000 kids to be dropped from the program at the
end of June 2007. We will hold the press conference at 1:00pm in room 116 at
the Capitol.
We will also gather at the main U.S. Post Office in Council Bluffs,
Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City from 12:30 to 1:30pm to pass out the
"Stop Wal-Mart Tax" flyer and inform taxpayers about how the Wal-Mart Tax is
hurting Iowa and America.
So please come out and join us, because together we can stop the Wal-Mart
tax and change Wal-Mart and Iowa for the better.
